History
The construction of the West Light began in 1858 and was completed in 1860. The lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding mariners through the treacherous waters surrounding Sable Island, particularly during the height of its importance as a major shipping route in the mid-19th century.
Architecture
The West Light stands at a tower height of approximately 30 meters (98 feet) and has a focal height of around 48 meters (157 feet). The lighthouse was designed by architect John Jameson, who also designed several other notable lighthouses along the Canadian coast. The structure is constructed from granite and features a distinctive octagonal shape.

The West Light emits a fixed red light, which can be seen for approximately 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) in all directions. The light's pattern is a steady burn, with no flashing or rotating characteristics.
